The third edition contains a completely new and exciting chapter on the Vernacular Revival, which carries the story forward from the nineteenth to the late twentieth century, and is illustrated with Dr Brunskill's fine drawings, a feature of the books since the original publication. In addition, the Bibliography has been brought up to date, the Preface has been revised and a number of photographs have been replaced.

R.W. Brunskill has recently retired as professor at De Montfort University, Leicester, and was formerly reader in architecture at the University of Manchester. He trained as an architect and has been deeply involved in the study of vernacular architecture for many years.

R.W. Brunskill is one of the pioneers in the study of vernacular architecture. In 1971, he published "Vernacular Architecture; An Illustrated Handbook". That book was one of the touchstone texts for the study of British vernacular architecture. Brunskill helped develop a vocabulary for describing vernacular buildings.Ten years later, he published "Traditional Buildings of Britain; An Introduction to Vernacular Architecture". Unfortunately, it is a pared down version of his groundbreaking book. There are nice photos and illustrations. However, "Traiditonal Buildings" lacks the intellectual rigor of his first book. In my opinion, Brunskill's "Houses and Cottages of Britain" first published in 1997 is a superior book. It is a much worthier heir to Brunskill's first book.
